Research Assignment

Your assignment may be to inform or argue a topic of your choosing. Select a topic that is of interest to you, perhaps a current or controversial issue.

Keep in mind that a research assignment requires you to present:

  • An introduction with a strong thesis (a brief summary of your topic may be essential so that your audience will have an understanding of your chosen topic)
  • An outline that demonstrates a topic with supporting details and analysis of that topic
  • A conclusion with final thoughts

Remember:

Informative Speech focuses on educating an audience about people, objects, events, processes, or concepts through facts and evidence. The speech includes definitions, explanations, descriptions, visual images, or demonstrations. An informative speech does not persuade an audience, give opinion, or take a position.

Argumentative Speech involves persuading an audience to think or act in a specific way. Argument is fueled by controversy, so knowing how to convince an audience to accept your perspective is your goal. Conduct research on your own on one issue by describing and arguing.  In addition, analyze and critique your topic, and offer possible solutions to end the issue/problem.
