What is "fake news?"

At basic level, " fake news" is a term that is used to describe any kind of false or deceptive news story, often one that is circulating on social media. Fake news sources deliberately publish hoaxes, disinformation, and propaganda designed to deceive readers for the purpose of political and/or financial gain.
